What do our pasture raised animals eat?

October 20, 2021

We often get asked the question, what are our farmers’ animals fed? Are they 100% grass-fed beef and pasture-raised poultry, or do they get any supplemental grains?

Since NIKU Farms is partnered with Ontario farmers, that question can be hard to answer – every farm does things their own way! BUT, one thing’s for sure across all of our farmers: all animals are raised naturally on pasture!

Here’s a look at some of our partner farms and how they feed their livestock.

Pasture raised lamb grazing in the field.

Over at 5 Chicks and a Farmer, there’s a wide variety of animals that need to be cared for! The chickens and turkeys get grass, as well as all the worms, grasshoppers, and other bugs they love to eat, and their chicks do get non-GMO feed along with water.

Their pasture-raised cattle eat grass during the summertime, and a mix of hay and grain during the fall months, and the pigs dig up roots and bugs that supplement their diet of non-GMO feed.

Blackview Farm uses rotational grazing much like 5 Chicks and a Farmer to feed their cattle. The pigs graze on pasture during the summer, and once fall starts, they’re able to forage on apples and nuts on the farm!

As for the lamb on Woolleys’ Lamb farm, they are 100% grass-fed and graze amongst the farm’s cherry trees.
