At NIKU Farms, we constantly talk about working to fix a broken food system. But what does this mean? What is our current food supply chain and what are the drawbacks?
The food system now
Right now, food goes from the local farms and fisheries to processing centres, to storage and warehouses where it sits for however long it needs to wait, then gets transported and distributed to markets and grocery stores to be sold.
And then, of course, there is the waste that gets produced – all of the food packaging, transportation pollution, and storage spaces that require maintenance to exist.
How we work to change that
Because there are so many steps involved in this chain of events, and so many people who need to be paid for their work along the way, the farmers themselves only ever see a small percentage of profit per sale – far less than their fair share.
By buying meat from NIKU Farms and choosing to directly support our partner farmers, we ensure the farmers earn the profit they deserve.
We also help to reduce the food waste produced through all that food transport, storage, and excess packaging! When you buy direct from local farmers, less travel pollution is produced. There is also significantly less travel waste, as our packaging is mostly recyclable and biodegradable!
NIKU Farms gives consumers an alternative to buying through the commercial food system – learn more about our efforts to be as sustainable as possible.
Continue to buy from local farmers markets, and make decisions that reduce food storage issues and support local farmers!
